A caricature exhibition dedicated to peace and justice was opened at the Faculty of History of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. The exhibition is part of a project on the same topic run by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands and presents selected caricatures by the Bulgarian artist Iliyan Savkov, based on ideas generated by Sofia University students.
Andreas Kiefer, Secretary General of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities (CLRA) of the Council of Europe, delivered a public lecture in front of representatives of the academic community and the students reading “Regional Politics” and “Public Administration” at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. The lecture’s focus was on the development of local and regional democracy in Europe.
Sofia University marked the feast day of its heavenly patron, St. Kliment Ohridski.
On the eve of the feast of the dormition of St. Kliment Ohridski and the patron feast-day of the oldest higher academic establishment in this country a piece of the holy relics of the patron-saint of Sofia University were donated to Sofia University by Bishop Sioniy, the Hegumen of the Holy Troyan Monastery, with the blessing of His Holiness the Bulgarian Patriarch Neofit.
At a General Assembly held on 17th November, 2015, in Lecture Theater 65 of the Rectorate of Sofia University, Professor Dr. Habil. Anastas Gerdjikov was elected Rector of the oldest and most reputable higher academic institution in this country with 190 votes. The other candidate for the post, Professor Dr. Tony Spasov, Corresponding Member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, garnered 162 of the votes.
It is the second time that Ilko Minev has made generous donation to Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski; the donation’s aim is to modernize the University’s facilities. He was awarded an honorary charter for his donation during the presentation of his book “The Daughter of the Rivers” which took place at the Egg Restaurant at the Rectorate of Sofia University.
A jubilee conference on the future perspectives of the scholarly subject of Japanese Studies at the Faculty of Classical and Contemporary Philology, marking the 25th anniversary of the subject, was held at Aula Magna of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”.
A solemn ceremony to award the national “For Women in Science, 2015” scholarships was held at the SS Cyril and Methodius National Library. This is part of the L’Oreal – UNESCO Program.
The second meeting of the Association of Вalkan Universities was held at the Trakya University in Edirne, Turkey. The organization set up in 2008 includes more than 70 academic institutions of higher education in all the Balkan countries.
On January 1st, 2016, as part of the Horizon 2020 – ICT-2015-20 Program, an Adaptive trust-based e-assessment System for Learning (TeSLA) project will be launched.
At the beginning of the solemn ceremony the Rector Professor Dr. Ivan Ilchev and the members of the Academic Council laid flowers at the statues of Evlogy and Hristo Georgiev. For a fourth consecutive year the oldest and most highly reputable academic institution in Bulgaria has kept its position among the 863 top universities in the world.
The new structure of the Institute has specialized premises: classrooms, study rooms, language laboratories, a library with a reading room, an exhibition hall, a multifunctional conference hall, and a theater hall. The large scale reconstruction work has been carried out with the assistance of Sofia University and the Beijing University for Foreign Languages.
At Aula magna of Sofia University “St Kliment Ohridski” a solemn ceremony was held to confer a Doctor honoris causa degree to Professor Harald Hepner from Carl Franz University (Graz, Austria).
In “the America for Bulgaria” Lecture Theatre at the Rectorate building of Sofia University Professor Giuseppe Consolo from Guido Carli University delivered a public lecture on the topic of “The Origin of Law and the Presumption of Innocence According to Article 27 of the Italian Constitution – the Antonov Case and the Attempt at Assassination of the Pope in the Light of the Constitution of Italy.”
The enriched Zograph Digital Research Library was officially opened at the Philological Library at the Rectorate building of Sofia University. The collection contains more than 450 digital copies of Slavonic manuscripts owned by prestigious collections in this country and abroad.
The Aula Magna of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” held the solemn ceremony of the conferment of the Doctor honoris causa degree on Professor Dr. Olga Mladenova, lecturer at the University of Calgary, Canada. The proposal for the conferment of the honorary title of the oldest and most highly reputable high academic institution in this country came from the Faculty of Slavic Philology at Sofia University and it is given for the overall scientific contribution of Professor Olga Mladenova to the domain of Slavic studies and to mark her anniversary.
In the “America for Bulgaria” lecture theatre at the Rectorate of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” the results of the completion of the “Career IT” Project for the past two years were announced. The project has been sponsored within the framework of the global “Microsoft” YouthSpark initiative and has been executed by the Alumni Association at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” (FEBA Alumni) in partnership with faculty from Sofia University.

On April 15, 2015, on the eve of the Constitution Day of Bulgaria, the fully renovated 272 Lecture Theatre at the Rectorate Building of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” was officially opened.
Prof. Dr. Roumen Pankov, Deputy Rector of Sofia University in charge of scientific and project activities, and Prof. Dr. Milena Stefanova, Deputy Rector in charge of the teaching activities, had a meeting with Mr. Arsim Bajrami, Minister of Education of Kosovo and His Excellency Mr. Shpend Kalaba, Ambassador of Kosovo to this country. The meeting was also attended by Prof. Dr. Panayot Karagyozov, Dean of the Faculty of Slavonic Philology, Prof. Dr. Vladimir Zhobov, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Slavonic Philology, Prof. Dr. Rousana Bejleri, Lecturer in Albanian language and culture at the Department of Balkan Studies at Sofia University.
A Centre for the study of Kazakh language, history and culture was opened at the Centre for Eastern Languages and Studies at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. During the ceremony a Memorandum for mutual understanding in the domain of culture, science, and education was signed between the diplomatic mission of the Republic of Kazakhstan to this country and Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”.
Two exhibitions, “The Mirror of the Heart” – a collection of Indian and Tibetan drawings by Lyudmila Klasanova, and the joint exhibition “India as Inspiration” by the curator Prof. Tsvetan Stoyanov, were opened at the Alma Mater Gallery of the Sofia University Rectorate.
A Sofia University IT team won the prestigious award in the category "Public Sector" of the 11th IT Project of the Year Competition with a project for improving the academic performance of the teaching staff at the departments with educational orientation at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ochridski”.
The Cinema House hosted a Modern Chinese Cinema Festival which included nine modern Chinese films of various genres and topics. The films had received a number of awards and nominations at prestigious international fora: the Berlinale Film Festival, the Sundance Film Festival, the Montreal World Film Festival, and many others. It was the first time most of them had been shown in public in this country.
In the foyer of the St. Kliment Ohridski University Library an exhibition was opened dedicated to the 110th anniversary of the international interlibrary book exchange in the Library.
A solemn ceremony to confer an honorary academic title to Professor Vassil Mrachkov, S.J.D was held at the Aula Magna of Sofia University "St.Kliment Ohridski". The proposition for the conferment of the honorary degree on behalf of the oldest and most prestigious academic institution in Bulgaria has been put forward by the Sofia University Faculty of Law as an acknowledgement of Professor Mrachkov's outstanding contributions to the fields of law science, higher juridical education and jurisdiction, as well as his seminal and strong academic and pedagogical cooperation with the University. The degree has also been awarded as a tribute to Professor Mrachkov's 80th birthday.
Ms. Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, delivered the Annual Nelson Mandela Memorial Lecture, Nelson Mandela’s Legacy, at the aula magna of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. The event was organized jointly by the Embassy of the Republic of South Africa to this country and the National Commission for UNESCO – Bulgaria, with the cooperation of the oldest high academic institution in the country. The ceremony was attended by the Rector of Sofia University, Professor Ivan Ilchev, Dr. Habil., ambassadors, members of the diplomatic corps, academic staff and university students.
On the eve of Prof. Ivan Soskov's 60th anniversary the Department of Mathematical Logic and Application organized a conference on Mathematical Logic in his memory. The conference was in the Gyolechica, September 19-22.
The solemn ceremony took place in Hall 1 of the Rectorate.
The new Bulgarian chapel on Antarctica will be painted during the next Bulgarian expedition, which is starting in a couple of days. The new chapel was built to replace the old one and will be painted after the Bulgarian Orthodox Church tradition, as announced by the leader of the expedition Prof. Pimpirev.

The national students' conference, dedicated to the 125th Jubilee of the University, started today.
The Green Year started on 14th October, 9.00 h. The initiative includes the yards of four faculties: Faculty of Philosophy, Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, Faculty of Biology and Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics. It is directed to cleaning out the litter and trimming the vegetation, renovating the benches and alleys and establishing new recreation spots.
The Centre of Excellence in the Humanities “Alma Mater” at SU “St Kliment Ohridski” announces a competition for 10 (ten) fellowship grants for a short-term research visit for senior foreign scholars applying with a research project in the field of the humanities for a period of 4 weeks at SU “St Kliment Ohridski”.
Sofia University Rector signed the contract for funding in the Ministry of Economics and Energy today. The project "Developing the competitiveness of the High-tech Cluster Sofia through establishing an experimental lab based on cutting-edge technologies and equipment for general clustering activities" is funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
The conference was held from 2nd to 6th September, 2013 in Sofia University campus in Kiten.

Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology presented the new project "Developing the capacity of specializing, postdoctoral and young scientist for teaching academic courses in and on a foreign language using current methodologies and ICT" in the Conference Hall on 2nd September.
An introductory meeting under the project “Cross-border Art of Gardening by The Black Sea”, in which Sofia University is a partner, was held on 30th August, 2013.
The programme starts in November, 2013.Innovation and enhanced interdisciplinary approach take a leading role in studying culture, literature, communication and translation.
Prof. Ilchev welcomed the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Mongolia in Bulgaria Lhamsuren Dugerzhav and the Advisor with the Embassy of Mongolia Dashdorzh Ganbold. The main focus of the visit was further development of the Bulgarian-Mongolian relations in the field of education.
Prof. Hristo Kaftandzhiev, Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication, expressed in his letter to the Rector gratitude towards Prof. Irina Koleva regarding the excellent organization and work of the project "Teacher training for developing knowledge, skills and competencies for working in an intercultural environment".
The address was directed to the Rector and to the Dean of the Faculty of Slavic Philology, in which the Minister, Prof. Aneliya Klisarova, expressed gratitude for the successful organization of the 51st International Summer Workshop of Foreign Bulgarian Studies Scientists.
Sofia University came first among the Bulgarian universities again: in the Ranking Web of Universities for 2013. The results are announced twice a year; in January and July.
