The University Botanic Gardens in Balchik held an official celebration dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the University and 120th anniversary of its founder's birth: Acad. Daky Yordanov.
The celebrations started with the academic commercium song Gaudeamus igitur and laying wreaths at Acad. Yordanov's memorial plate. Assoc. Prof. Yuriy Kuchev laid a wreath on behalf of the Rectors of Sofia University, and Dr. Krasimir Kosev, Director of the Gardens - on behalf of the Sofia University Botanic Gardens.
After the Bulgarian anthem, the academic procession led by the Vice-Rector started the ceremony in the Heavenly Garden. Assoc. Prof. Yuriy Kuchev addressed the academia and guests on behalf of the Rectos. Prof. Dimitar Ivanov, Head of Department of Paleobotanic of the Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, delivered an academic speech dedicated to Acad. Daky Yordanov.
Addresses to the Rector and the team of the Gardens were delivered on behalf of the Minister of Culture, Dr Peter Stoyanovich by Zheny Mihaylova, Prof. Vanya Dobreva, Chair of the Educational Committee of the National Assembly, the Chair of the Bulgarian Botanic Association Prof. Dobrinka Temniskova, delivered by Prof. Dimiter Ivanov, the doyen of the tropical agriculture and Acad. Yordanov's co-worker Serafim Serafimov, Acad. Yordanov's son, Prof. Stefan Yordanov, Bulgarian Navy Contra-Admiral Rumen Nikolov, delivered by major Rosen Ivanov, the Chair of the Association of Ornamental Plants Producers Trifon Trifonov, Dipl. Eng., Prof. Mariana Filipova, Director of the Natural Science Museum, Varna.
Assoc. Prof. Martin Ivanov, Director of Archives State Agency, opened the exhibition "Balchik, the quiet harbour". Another exhibition, dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the University, was opened as well. In addition, an exhibition of the Archives Department and Sofia University Museum was opened to present documents and photos related to Acad. Yordanov and the history of the Botanic Gardens.
The celebrations were attended by many guests, representatives of universities, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, NGOs, academia, teachers and headmasters.
At the same time, the 11th State Riding Competition took place in the University Botanic Gardens Eco-park, Varna.
