Exposition about Antarctica was opened on Sofia University Patron's Day

A permanent exhibition "Antarctica: the Magic Ice Land", dedicated to Sofia University Patron's Day, opened today.

The exhibition is dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the First Bulgarian Expedition to Antarctica and the 20th anniversary of the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute.

The Museum of Antarctic opened on Sofia University Patron's Day as it plays an important role in the Bulgarian Arctic research: the first expedition in 1987/88 was organized to commemorate the 100th jubilee of the University, the University supports all expeditions so far, and the Bulgarian Centre for Antarctic Research and the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute are situated in its building.

Assoc. Prof. Yuriy Kuchev, Vice-Rector, opened the exposition and wished successful expeditions to all Antarctic researchers. Prof. Pimpirev told about the contribution of Sofia University and the other institutions for the establishment of the Antarctic base camp.

Solomon Passy shared his dream the Bulgarian state to get more involved in supporting the private efforts of Sofia University to realize the Antarctic expeditions. The exhibition includes educational section dedicated to the history of the Bulgarian Antarctic research and its relations with Sofia University. It includes documents and scientific pieces, unique photographs, as well as the flags of Bulgaria and Sofia University which were on the ice continent.
