ABOUT

The Alma Mater Interdisciplinary Summer Academy is an innovative educational initiative targeted at deepening the knowledge and increasing the skills of BA and MA students in social, political and cultural studies and in the humanities through interdisciplinary courses and training modules. It is organized jointly by the University Center of Research Excellence “Alma Mater”, the Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology and the European Union and European Integration Program at Sofia University and Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

The topic chosen for the first edition of the Academy in 2016 is “Europe and Beyond: Challenges to Knowledge and Research in Social Sciences and the Humanities”. It will provide the framework for specialized interdisciplinary courses presented interactively by a team of internationally renowned experts and practitioners in various subjects such as International Relations, Political Science, History, Sociology, Cultural Studies, Psychology, Media Studies, Regional and Global Studies etc.

 

PROGRAMME

The core target groups of the Academy is undergraduate and graduate university students from EU and non-EU countries. The program will consist of lectures, seminars, workshops and training modules.

Each course is 20 academic hours and gives 3 ECTS credits.

CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE

To complete the Academy, the participants have to:

• Actively participate in all seminars, lectures and workshops

• Complete all assignments set by the course leaders.

Having successfully completed the course, all participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance where all completed courses will be listed with the corresponding ECTS credits.

 

WHO CAN APPLY?

BA and MA students who are interested in the fields of study covered by the proposed courses. All applicants should choose at least 2 of the courses offered (at least four courses should be listed in the application letter in order of preference). Good knowledge of English or German is essential.

 

HOW TO APPLY?

Due to the limited places available the enrollment in the Academy will be on the basis of the merit of the applications.

The deadline to submit the application is Sunday, 5th June 2016. Applicants will be informed by 13th June about the results and the courses in which the students of the Academy will be enrolled.

 

FEES:

The tuition fee for the Academy is 360 euro. The fee covers full board, tuition, teaching materials, cultural events. Travel expenses to city of Varna or Burgas are not covered by the organizers. All international students will be transported to the Academy site by the organizers and back to one of the airports.

 

SCHOLARSHIPS: There will be a certain number of scholarships to cover half or the full sum of the tuition fee for Bulgarian students. The students applying for a scholarship should provide a short letter of motivation.

The package includes the following documents:

  • Europass CV
  • Motivation letter in a free format that includes the reasons for applying, the selection of 4 Academy courses in order of preference, the motivation for a scholarship request (if applicable) and the names and contact details of two university professors who know the applicants well and are ready to provide reference
  • A document that certifies that the applicant is currently a student in a higher education institution
