Accounting and Sustainability

 

Program Duration: Three semesters, with intake during the winter semester. Classes are held after working hours on weekdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Form of Study: Full-time. For both economists and non-economists.

This master's program is open to all applicants who hold a bachelor's or master's degree in Economics and Finance or Business Administration, as well as related and derivative fields, or in a field different from Economics and Finance or Business Administration.

An information session for first-year students of the "Accounting and Sustainability" master's program will be held on 30.09.2024 (Monday) at 18:00 at the following link: https://bit.ly/3zMaoQG.

 

Applicants for admission to the program in the winter semester of the 2024/2025 academic year can submit their documents through the platform https://feba.kmk.uni-sofia.bg/ in one of the following three stages:

  • First stage: from July 1 to July 21, 2024
  • Second stage: from July 25 to September 15, 2024
  • Third stage: from September 21 to September 30, 2024

 

Admission interviews for the master's program will be held online on the following dates:

Admission Requirements: Bachelor's or master's degree in Economics and Finance or Business Administration, as well as related and derivative fields, or in a field different from Economics and Finance or Business Administration. To apply for the master's program, candidates must send a CV to the email address: iliana_ankova@feb.uni-sofia.bg and attend an oral interview to assess their motivation, qualifications, and interests. The final score is calculated based on the diploma grade, the state exam (thesis defense) grade, and the interview grade.

The master's program "Accounting and Sustainability" aims to provide the necessary interdisciplinary knowledge and develop the skills in accountants and auditors that will enable them to take on a leading role in the reporting and auditing of companies' sustainability information.

The curriculum of the master's program includes:

  • Introductory courses in accounting, taxation, and corporate social responsibility, which allow for further enhancement of knowledge with courses such as "Advanced Financial Accounting", advanced taxation courses, and courses on applicable systems and standards for managing corporate sustainability and responsibility.
  • Specialized courses on engagements for expressing assurance related to sustainability reporting, International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), and European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS).
  • Courses developing soft skills.
  • Elective courses covering topics such as taxonomy, environmental reporting, green accounting, PMI methodology for effective business project management, and others.

 

The curriculum of the "Accounting and Sustainability" master's program also includes elective courses that are mandatory for students who do not have a bachelor's or master's degree in Economics or Business Administration at the time of application. Non-economist students are required to choose two general economics preparatory courses – "Economics" in the first semester and "Finance" in the second semester of their studies.

 

Possible career paths for graduates of the master's program:

The competences developed in the training process are in accordance with the "Key Competences for Lifelong Learning – European Reference Framework" of the EU from 2018 and the National Qualification Framework of the Republic of Bulgaria from 2012.

According to the „National Qualification Framework of the Republic of Bulgaria“, graduates of the master's program can work as: accountants (junior and senior), and after gaining the necessary professional experience, as chief and deputy chief accountants, tax consultants, employees in the state administration, tax and financial control, financial analysts, lecturers and scientific researchers. They may participate in or lead sustainability teams in companies as sustainability reporting specialists. Graduates can occupy these positions in the non-financial sector - in manufacturing and commercial entities, as well as in service companies. They can also work in the financial sector - in banking institutions, investment intermediaries, insurance and pension insurance companies. Graduates of the master's program can also work in the public sector, as well as in non-governmental organizations.
