The Department's activities are focused on the following areas:
Educational - regular study groups with a sports focus for students wishing to practice various types of sports disciplines, including students in the ERASMUS programme. Enrollment for the academic discipline "sport" takes place at the beginning of each academic year through an online system.
Sports competition - representative teams – at the beginning of each academic year, in each type of sport, the coach selects candidates for the University's representative team. The teams participate in the annual autumn national university championships (NUC) and spring university games (UG) organized by the Association for University Sport (AUS). Training sessions are held twice a week according to a specified schedule.
Sports camps and events - winter training and sports camp. Held at the beginning of the second semester in the Malyovitsa area. Its programme includes theory and practice - ski training for beginners and intermediate skiers, advanced training sessions, hiking trips, a competition at the end of the period and preparation of representative teams.
Summer training and sports camp. Held at the beginning of September in Lozenets village. Its programme includes theory and practice - training in the following sports: swimming, canoeing-kayaking, yoga, cross-training and conditioning, beach tennis, tennis, beach volleyball, judo and martial arts, basketball, football, and preparation of representative teams in various sports. At the end of the period, a Beach Tennis Tournament is organised.
Annual hike - Ascent of Cherni Vrah in October in collaboration with the Student Council.
Annual "Athlete of the Year" ceremony in November - the ceremonial event awarding the best athletes of Sofia University.
Annual interfaculty tournament 'Rector's Cup' in May. The programme includes interfaculty competitions in all sports offered at the university. It ends with an overall ranking and awarding of the winning faculties.
Winter and summer sports forum for sports teachers from higher education institutions in Bulgaria organised by the Department of Sports at Sofia University. The winter forum is held in the Malyovitsa area in February, the summer format in Lozenets village in September. Participants – sports educators from Bulgarian higher education institutions – hold a round table on the issues of physical education and sports in the education system. Various sports activities are also held – beach tennis, tennis, beach volleyball, basketball, pétanque, and bridge-belote.
Research and project activities:
The international scientific conference 'Modern Trends in Physical Education and Sport' – held annually in November since 2009. Internal University projects funded by funds allocated specifically from the state budget and the 'Scientific Research' fund of Sofia University 'St. Kliment Ohridski' 2024/25 – 1 project for a scientific forum with the coordinator Assoc. Prof. Iv. Karparova
3 thematic projects with coordinators Prof. Iren Peltekova, Assoc. Prof. Stefan Miletiev and Assist. Prof. Gergana Despotova
'Exercise the European Way at SU', a project under Regulation 46 of the Council of Ministers.
"Sport for a more peaceful world" project - under the Programme for the Implementation of the Municipal Strategy for the Development of Physical Culture and Sports of Sofia Municipality.
Recreation / Preventive, rehabilitative - Consultations - in the building of the Rectorate (Centre for Kinesitherapy and Sports Hall in Block 8 - Student Town), consultations are held by specialists with students, lecturers and staff of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", as well as with external visitors to assess their health status, determine their rehabilitation potential and treatment. Preventive and therapeutic procedures using kinesitherapy and physical therapy methods.
CDC "Modernisation of Physical Education and Sports Training" - postgraduate qualification courses for PE teachers, organised and led by DS: 2023/24 - head Prof. B. Tumanova, members - Assoc. Iv. Karparova, Assoc. St. Miletiev, and Assoc. B. Rangelova. 2023/25.
Free access to sports for university teachers and staff is offered according to the specified schedules in the following sports: sport climbing, yoga, Latin dance, swimming.
