Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication

 

The Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication is a basic part of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” – the oldest and most prestigious high education institution in Republic of Bulgaria.

The academic training on journalism in Bulgaria began in the 1952-1953 academic year when “Journalism” major is introduced at the Faculty of Philology at Sofia University. Later, this major became a separate faculty at SU.

The Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication is created in 1974.

It offers to the students a contemporary training in professional field “Public Communications and Information Sciences”, and ensures full-time and part-time studying in narrowly specified programs.

The philosophy of training at the faculty is based on the mutual respect of opinions and value systems and on the wish for lecturers and students to organize together working communities.

The mission of the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication is to achieve high quality of education for students from different majors, to prepare highly qualified workers for the system of social communication. They are active, initiative, rigorous and mobile. The Academic staff works actively for the improvement of the quality of their education.

The aim of the training is obtaining of solid knowledge and skills for the achievement of effective professional and social realization of graduated students in the field of public communication and for the preparation of specialists that are able to think constructively and purposefully, that are willing constantly to improve their knowledge and individuality. Through communication in solid academic medium future Bachelors and Masters build their expectations and skills for universal and non-standard thinking, for whole life learning, for social empathy and responsibility toward social problems.

The main aim of the management of FJMC is constantly to combine good training programs on the professional field “Public Communications and Information Sciences” with research activity and to attract students in interactive forms of education or in joint research projects.
Training process and teaching activity that is connected to it are organized in such way that they are successfully adapted to the dynamically changing and highly competitive medium.
Efforts are made so that a level of training is being sustained – a level that guarantees mobility of journalism, public relations, and book publishing students in the European Union and as part of the programs for international co-operation.
