The degree programmes in Geology and Geography were set up at Sofia University at the end of the 19th century. They form the basis of education and research in the fields of Geology and Geography in Bulgaria.

The main contribution for the development of both teaching and research belongs to some outstanding scientists like Prof. Georgi Bonchev, Prof. Georgi Zla­tarski, Prof. Stefan Bonchev, Prof. Zheko Radev, Prof. Anastas Ishirkov, Prof. Dimitar Yaranov, Prof. Anastas Beshkov.

The Faculty of Geology and Geography has about 1176 full-time and part-time Bulgarian and foreign stu­dents in the four degree programmes: Geology, Geogra­phy, Tourism and Regional Development and Politics.
