 The University Library hosts the First Meeting of the Balkan University Libraries

The experts discuss the challenges and future of the university libraries in the context of the globalization. Some of the topics are the digitalization of the cultural heritage, the potential collaboration for Balkan projects, the perspectives of the project "Culture 2007 - 2013".

Mrs Anna Angelova, Director of Sofia University Library, announced that this meeting aims to lay the foundations of a fruitful collaboration on the Balkans. Her appeal "Together, but different" was approved. The speech delivered by Assoc. Prof. Aleksander Dimchev, Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, raised great interest as well. He touched upon diverse important issues such as the importance of the libraries for preservation and dissemination of knowledge in the digital era, the new tendencies: accessibility and digitalization of the information, international collaboration, etc.

Part of the meeting was an exhibition dedicated to the scientific research on the Balkans: "The Balkans - research of Bulgarian and foreign scientists" and uses the rich fund of the library.

Special interest attracted the part of the exhibition dedicated to the collection of valuable manuscripts, which includes travel notes of the Balkans, old geographic maps, student books in grammar of the different Balkan languages, etc.

The exhibition was opened by Mrs Anna Angelova, Director of Sofia University Library, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Todor Popnedelev - Vice-Dean of the Faculty of History.
