The Bulgarian Contribution to the Forth International Polar Year

An official session on The Bulgarian contribution to the Fourth International Polar Year took place on the 12th June in the Aula. It was organized by the National Center for Polar Research, Bulgarian Antarctic Institute, and Manfred Worner Foundation.

The participants had a look at the photo exhibition depicting the 16th and 17th Bulgarian expeditions, listened to the interesting lecture delivered by Prof. Hristo Pimpirev – the Head of the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute and lecturer at Faculty of Geology and Geography, and were presented with the map of the islands Livingston, Greenwich, Robert, Snow and Smith. The President, Mr. Parvanov addressed the participants.

 

The Fourth International Polar Year is the largest scientific event for the last 50 years. Its main goal was to draw the attention of politicians, scientists, and other citizens to the importance of the polar regions. Bulgaria has become an important polar nation and is a consultant of the Arctic Council, it also supports a scientific station on the Antarctic continent.
