Orthoepic and Orthographic Bulgarian Language Dictionary

The promotion of the Orthoepic and Orthographic Bulgarian Language Dictionary by Petar Pashov and Hristo Purvev took place on 9th June, Hall 1.

The new Orthoepic and Orthographic Bulgarian Language dictionary of Sofia University Press is issued under the recommendation and funding of the Parliament Commissions for Education and Science and for Human Rights and Religions, and with the support of the Ministry of Education and Sciences.

This is the fifth enlarged edition of the Dictionary. It was issued for the first time in 1975 and is a result of the work of two renowned Bulgarian scientists: Prof. Hristo Purvev and Prof. Petar Pashov. It raised such an interest that four years later was issued for the second time. The current edition contains about 350, 000 words and word formations. Special attention is paid to the most common errors and deviations from the correct pronunciation and spelling. The new eddition contains also the transliteration rules, which are introduced for the first time.

It was acknowledged that the initiative was successful due to the support of the executive authority represented by the Minister of Education and Sciences Assoc. Prof. Dr. Daniel Valchev. The Minister announced that a national campaign for the Bulgarian language might be initiated by the Ministry and Sofia University in the months to come.

The dictionary print run is 15 000 and will be distributed for free in the educational system.
