Bulgaria is a country of the spirit and educatiion and sciences have always been a priority, reminded Prof. Ilchev, the Rector

The discussion between the Academic Council of Sofia University and representatives of the legislation, students, syndicates, students and businessmen ended without setting any deadlines for beginning of the reofrms in the Bulgarian higher educational system.

From the very beginning of the round table it became clear that to talk about Sofia University 'problems' is inadequate. The status of the University is that of a highest ranking in almost all professional branches it prepares specialists for.

Prof. Ilchev declared his support for the separation of the academic from the economic management of the University. He also stated firm support for the upcoming reforms in the higher education declaring that the Academia will facilitate in any way their definition.

Many of the speeches were oriented towards the need of a strategy for the Bulgarian higher education and sciences as the long run objectives of the University are to prepare specialists for the economy.

Sergey Ignatov, the Minister of Education, promised the specialities which receive the highest ranking to be funded additionally starting from the next year. Tsveta Georgieva, the Chair of the Students' Council insisted the subsidy to be increased by 50%. The Minister said that such a subsidy could not be arranged, however he promised 25 % and rising increase. Specialities with lower ranking will not be funded thus they will close down.

The Minister also said that the problems with the bill for Academic Development are not due to his Ministry and he expected the bill not to be passed a second time. The financial minister Simeon Dyankov did not appologise for his words that he would not recommend Sofia University as he stated that they were taken out of the context.
