50th Summer Workshop in Bulgarian Language and Culture - a place for tolerance

"The researchers in the field of Bulgarian Studies together with all Bulgarians abroad are, in a way, ambassadors of Bulgaria throughout the world".

These words of the Bulgarian Vice-President Mrs. Margarita Popova officially opened the workshop. Prof. Panayot Karagyozov, Dean of the Faculty of Slavic Studies, spoke about the summer of 1963, when about 50 foreign students in Bulgarian Studies started learning Bulgarian language, studying Bulgarian literature and culture at Sofia University. Initially the workshop was meant to help improve the linguistic skills of the foreign students in Bulgarian Studies. Consequently, our people from Bessarabia, Moldova, Western Suburbs and other, more distant destinations.

Thanks to the workshop, long before programmes such as Tempus, Erasmus, etc. Sofia University started student mobility. The workshop is a place of ethnic, religious, cultural tolerance and understanding.
