Prof. Ivan Shishmanov was born on 22nd June,1862. He was a scientist in the field of literature and folklore studies, a Bulgarian Minister of Education and one of the founders of Sofia University.
He was a professor of history of literature and culture, as well as comparative studies in these fields.
He was the heir of the Bulgarian Renaissance family the Shishmanovi. He studied in Vienna, then philosophy and literature in Geneva. In 1888 he successfully completed his doctoral degree in Germany. He was the founder and editor of the "Collection of folk stories, science and literature", editor of the journal "Bulgarian Review", a minister plenipotentiary in Ukraine (1918-19).
