An official celebration of the 140th anniversary of Acad. Stoyan Argirov's birth will take place on 14th October. He was the founder of the Bulgarian Library Science and the first Director of Sofia University Library.
Dr. Anna Angelova, Director of Sofia University Library today, reminded in her speech of Stoyan Argirov's work and innovative ideas. He graduated in Prague, Slavic Studies, then he became a Deputy Director and Director in the Library of Plovdiv.
Stoyan Argirov was the first Director of Sofia University Library - from 1903 to 1936 - and laid the foundations of its modern European arrangement. He was the first lecturer of Library Science at Sofia University, with more than 70 works published. His most significant work was "A Guide for Establishment of Public, Regional, Student and Private Libraries". He also laid the foundations of the library jurisdiction in Bulgaria.
A site, dedicated to his scientific and cultural heritage, was presented during the celebrations. After showing the film, dedicated to Acad. Argirov, his nephew and distinguished librarians were awarded with the book about his life and research.
