Anna Petrova from the Faculty of Law Is the Student of the Year of Sofia University

At a solemn ceremony at Aula magna of the oldest Bulgarian high academic institution the winners of the Student of the Year at Sofia University were awarded. The ceremony was organized for a third consecutive year by the Students’ Council at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” and this year it is dedicated to the 130ieth anniversary of the establishment of Alma mater. The best Ph D student has received a prize for a second consecutive year.

The competition is held under the aegis of the Rector of Alma mater and has the goal of facilitating the development of undergraduates and Ph D students and of awarding the best amongst them. The Prize Fund of the competition is partially sponsored by the budget of the Students’ Council supplemented by other sponsors and partners. The goal of the Students’ Council is that the prizes for the winners in each of the categories should be not only material but also of a stimulus that will help the winners in their future professional development.

The selection committee was chaired by the Rector Professor Dr. habil. Anastas Gerdzhikov and included as members the Vice-rector the Vice-rector Associate Professor Dr Georgi Vulchev, the Rector of Sofia University for 1999-2007 Professor Boyan Biolchev, the chairman of the Commission for Education and Science in Parliament Ms. Milena Damyanova, the Deputy minister for Youth and the Sports Ms. Vanya Koleva, the Ombudsman of the Republic of Bulgaria Ms. Maya Manolova, the editor-in-chief of the “24 Hours” daily Mr Borislav Zyumbyulev, the President of Musala Soft JSC Ms. Elena Marinova, the main Executive Director of UniCredit Bulban Mr Levon Hampartsumyan, the Dean of the Faculty of Biology at Sofia University Associate professor Dr. Stoyan Shishkov, the Chairperson of the Permanent Commission for Healthcare and Social Policy at Sofia Municipal Council Dr Veselin Milev, the Chairperson of the National Representation of the Students’ Councils Ms. Yana Vangelova, and the chairperson of the Department of Theory and History of the State and Law at the Faculty of Law of Sofia University Professor Dr Daniel Vulchev who reviewed the 73 applications.

The competitors were divided in ten categories: “Pedagogical Sciences“; “Humanities“; “Social Sciences“; “Economics“; “Law”; “Natural Sciences and Biotechnologies”; “Mathematics and Informatics“; “Healthcare“; “Volunteer Activities“ and “Sports“.

The student of the year of Sofia University was the fifth year student Anna Petrova from the Faculty of Law.

She received the award from the Rector of Alma mater Professor Doctor habil Anastas Gerdzhikov. Anna has scored high academic achievements and she has wide interests in many walks of life. During her years at the university she participated in numerous competitions, projects and programs at national and international levels, seminars, conferences, and courses. She was a member of various internship programs, including the Fulbright Program at Sofia Regional Court.

Anna is a member of the team of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, which in April/ May 2017 won the international EU law competition -- Central and East European Moot Court Competition, organized by the British Law Centre under the aegis of the EU Court and the Center for European Legal Sciences at Cambridge University.

For a second consecutive year the best Sofia University Ph D student has been awarded. The 2018 Prize went to Kalina Kamenova from the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy.

In 2013 she completed her B. Sc. Degree in “Computer Chemistry”, and in 2015 in her M.Sc. “Medicinal Chemistry” at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. Presently, she is a full-time Ph D student at the Department of “Analytical Chemistry” at the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy. She is the co-author of 6 publications in refereed journals with impact factor, 2 publications in refereed journals with no impact factor and one publication in one non-refereed Bulgarian journal. She has taken part in a number of national and international research projects. For the period 2012-2018 she has participated in national and international conferences. She is the laureate of two “Alma mater” prizes from the Rector of Sofia University “St. Kliment OhridskI” for achievements in the field of science.
