GATE institute “Big Data for Smart Society” is a research institute, established in 2019 in Sofia, Bulgaria as a joint initiative between Sofia University Bulgaria, Chalmers University of Technology and Chalmers Industrial Technology, Sweden. Its mission is to accelerate the Big Data and Artificial Intelligence research, innovation and education in collaboration with government, industry and society as a whole.

GATE is focused on developing research capacity in 4 Data Science areas:

  • Big Data Management
  • Big Data Analytics
  • Big Data Insight
  • Software Engineering for Big Data and AI

With respect to its planned intensive development in 2020, GATE Institute is looking for talented resеarchers for the following positions:

 

Common responsibilities

  • Gets involved in interdisciplinary Digital Health related research activities utilizing the latest Big Data, ML and AI technologies in collaboration between GATE Institute and its partners;
  • Performs individual (under supervision) and collaborative research;
  • Contributes to high quality publications;
  • Assists in projects planning at the level of tasks estimation;
  • Perform state-of-the-art Bioinformatics analyses;
  • Prepares presentations to communicate research results at national and international level and participates in various dissemination events such as conferences, workshops and seminars;
  • Builds strong relationships with fellow researchers across the Institute, the University and within the research community to collaborate on research projects;
  • Undertakes any other duties of equivalent standing, as assigned by the Research Group Leader;
  • Engages in continuous professional development, keeps up-to-date with latest technology trends and standards in the relevant to the Bioinformatics area and participates in various events for learning and knowledge exchange.

 

One or more of the following responsibilities:

  • Proposes appropriate (and innovative) data ingestion, preparation, integration and enrichment techniques, optimally addressing data quality requirements;
  • Develops new methods, algorithms and automated solutions for the integration, simulation and visualization of data (including geo-spatial and spatio-temporal data) originated from multiple distributed sources;
  • Participates in the development of Big Data Analysis solutions by designing and implementing advanced Machine Learning, Statistics, information extraction and retrieval techniques in the field of Digital Health;
  • Enhances data quality by validating mappings between different data sources;

 

Skills, experience and qualifications

 

Essential

  • A minimum of Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Statistics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Applied mathematics, AI, Informatics, or a related technical field;
  • Experience with external databases containing results from biomedical experiments in the fields of Genetics, Public Health, etc.;
  • Experience with programming (e.g. R, Python, Java, C++ or other);
  • Strong motivation for a career in research and ability to carry out research and produce results under supervision;
  • Love for insights and aptitude of critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis of new and complex ideas;
  • Solid oral/written communication and presentation skills in order to explain the outcome of research (and value thereof) to coworkers and peers;
  • Ability to work proactively, with minimal supervision, both independently and as part of a team with professionals from various disciplines;
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work on multiple assignments, and a motivation for delivering results with high added value;
  • Fluent English is a must.

 

Experience with one or more of the following

  • Experience in data management disciplines including data gathering, integration, modeling, clearing, optimization, storing and data quality;
  • Experience in areas directly relevant to Big Data engineering responsibilities and tasks;
  • Experience in utilizing Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning methods;
  • Experience in database development is a plus;
  • Experience in utilizing HPC resources for performing large-scale computations;
  • Experience in analyzing data from microarray experiments, Next Generation Sequencing experiments, longitudinal studies or health records.
