GATE institute “Big Data for Smart Society” is an autonomous research institute, established in 2019 in Sofia, Bulgaria as a joint initiative between Sofia University Bulgaria, Chalmers University of Technology and Chalmers Industrial Technology, Sweden. Its mission is to accelerate the Big Data and Artificial Intelligence research, innovation and education in collaboration with government, industry and society as a whole.

GATE is focused on developing research capacity in 4 Data Science areas:

  • Big Data Management
  • Big Data Analytics
  • Big Data Insight
  • Software Engineering for Big Data and AI

With respect to its planned intensive development in 2020, GATE Institute is looking for talented resеarchers for the following positions:

 

Common responsibilities:

  • Researches and analyzes the landscape of innovative approaches that could significantly contribute to scientific goals of GATE;
  • Performs individual and collaborative research in the area of Big Data and AI;
  • Keeps up-to date with the research environment (for example funding bodies), identifies opportunities and contributes to project proposals preparation for research fundin;
  • Leads and/or contributes to high quality publications;
  • Participates in interdisciplinary projects in collaboration between GATE and its partners;
  • Develops strong relationships with external key stakeholders, including project partners, industry, policy and other academic bodies and where appropriate represent the Institute;
  • Manages work package and tasks of GATE projects and contributes to projects coordination and management by providing direction, support and guidance;
  • Mentors less experienced teammates, helping them to be more effective and successful in their research trajectory;
  • Engages in continuous professional development and keeps up-to-date with latest Big Data and AI technology trends, takes ownership for and manages own career progression, sets realistic and achievable career goals;
  • Undertakes any other duties of equivalent standing as assigned by the Research Group leader.

 

One or more of the following responsibilities:

  • Researches and develops methods, algorithms and automated solutions for efficient storage, modification and streaming of large-scale data models and simulations;
  • Participates in the development of multidimensional models from raw data relying on the existing standards and ontologies;
  • Adds semantics to the developed multidimensional models originating from heterogeneous data such as crowd sourced and deep learning/image recognition data;
  • Takes part in the development of the Big Data Analysis solutions by devising and implementing advanced Machine Learning, statistics, and information extraction and retrieval techniques;
  • Explores, proposes and validates new approaches and methods for engineering of Big Data and AI systems and Data Science projects.

 

Skills, experience and qualifications:

 

Essential

  • A PhD Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Information systems, Informatics, Data Science, AI or related field or a Master’s Degree in the same areas plus a minimum of 4 years industry-based relevant research experience;
  • Experience in participating in research projects, involving a wide variety of stakeholders;
  • Demonstrated ability to conceive, design, implement and adapt research programs; and to carry out research under minimal supervision;
  • A scientific contribution, through original research that extends the frontier of knowledge by developing a body of work, innovation or application, evidenced by publications, software output, technology transfers, etc.;
  • Proven ability of critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis of new and complex ideas;
  • Advanced communication, presentation and influencing skills, in order to be able to explain the value of their research to the research community;
  • Fluent English is a must.

 

Experience in one or more of the following:

  • Demonstrated systematic understanding of Software Engineering concepts and mastery of research associated with that field;
  • Experience with Big Data and/or AI;
  • Experience with Semantic Web/Ontologies and ontology development as a whole. Understanding of W3C and OGC standards including XML, RDF, OWL, RDFS, CityGML or CityJSON, LandInfra;
  • Proficiency in Object-oriented/object and functional languages such as Python, Java, C++, Scala, R, Groovy or others;

 

Desirable

  • Experience in working with large, heterogeneous datasets in building and optimizing data pipelines, data integration and enrichment using semantic technologies;
  • Solid experience in current engineering methodologies, DevOps, CI/CD, etc.

Stages of the contest:
