Department of Library and Information Studies and Cultural Policy offers study opportunities within three state accredited PhD programs for professional heading 3.5. “Public communications in information sciences”. Formal field classification is: social, business, and law sciences.

 

PhD in BOOK SCIENCE, LIBRARIANSHIP, AND BIBLIOGRAPHY

Program annotation:

The PhD program has a study duration of three years for full-time students and four years for part-time students. It is intended for candidates, who successfully fulfill the requirements presented by the “Librarianship, scientific information, and cultural policy” department. The modular nature of the program makes it suitable for both LIS specialists, as well as students who have completed other study programs within or outside the Sofia University.

The “Book science, librarianship, and bibliography” PhD program is developed in accordance with the latest tendencies within the fields of humanitarian science and book science. It is the only program of its kind in Bulgaria. It follows, develops, and enriches international models for the education of PhD students in this complicated research field: one that covers the past, present and future of books and all elements related to their creation: authorship, book publishing and printing, book commerce, libraries, bibliography, readers, and the very process of reading.

The primary aims of the “Book science, librarianship, and bibliography” PhD program are to:

  • Facilitate the development of the field of book science through the efforts of the academic staff of the department;
  • Provide an opportunity for graduates of master’s programs to further develop skills that can help them find career opportunities in the fields of academia and research.

The educational tasks of the “Book science, librarianship, and bibliography” PhD program are to:

  • Provide an academic environment for the professional growth of master’s degrees graduates who have shown the motivation to work within the field of research;
  • Provide opportunities for research in interesting and perspective scientific topics and fields;
  • Guarantee the PhD students’ rights for study mobility by facilitating inter-organization and international student exchange;
  • Foster the application of criteria that ensures high quality of research achievements within the field of books science.


Structure of the PhD study plan

The “Book science, librarianship, and bibliography” PhD program features a wide range of knowledge that encompasses the millennium long history of book culture, books themselves, specialized libraries and bibliographies, authorship, book publishing and printing, book commerce, readers, and the very process of reading. The primary academic principles of the program are multifield coverage, flexibility, and facilitating individual research.

The study process within the program is aligned with the needs of the PhD students. It aims to balance between providing help with their research and helping them acquire a wide range of professional skills and competencies.

The “Book science, librarianship, and bibliography” PhD program provides students with deep theoretical knowledge and practical skills, that enables the successful completion of theoretical and practical research, the development, evaluation and management of projects, and the presenting and interpreting of research results.

The plan is structured in way that facilitates the completion of preset study goals and to enable the comparison between the various theoretical movements within the field of book science and its social and cultural roles in contemporary society.

 

PhD in THEORY OF SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION

Program annotation:

The PhD program has a study duration of three years for full-time students and four years for part-time students. It is intended for candidates, who successfully fulfill the requirements presented by the “Librarianship, scientific information, and cultural policy” department. The modular nature of the program makes it suitable for both LIS specialists, as well as students who have completed other degrees within or outside the Sofia University.

The “Theory of scientific information” PhD program is developed in accordance with the latest tendencies within the field of information science and all its associated fields. The program gives students the chance to research and analyze various challenging fields such as: information services, information seeking behavior and information needs of users, specifics and evaluation of information products and services, systems for the tracking of publication and citation activity, information literacy in the context of the digital society, information seeking processes and evaluation of information resources, bibliometric indicators and scientometric databases, among others.

The primary aims of the “Theory of scientific information” PhD program are to:

  • Facilitate the development of the field of information science through the efforts of the academic staff of the department;
  • Provide an opportunity for graduates of master’s programs to further develop the skills that can help them find career opportunities in the fields of academia and research.

The modular nature of the program makes it suitable for both LIS specialists, as well as students who have completed other study programs within or outside the Sofia University.

The “Information seeking systems” PhD program is developed in accordance with the latest tendencies within the fields of information science and the application of new technologies for the processing, storage and dissemination of information. The program follows, develops, and further enriches the international models for preparing PhD students for work within the fields of information science, communication in the digital and virtual environments, and modeling and management of information systems and processes.

The primary aims of the “Information seeking systems” PhD program are to:

  • Facilitate the development of the field of information systems through the efforts of the academic staff of the department;
  • Provide an opportunity for graduates of master’s programs to further develop the skills that can help them find career opportunities in the fields of academia and research.

The primary educational tasks of the “Information seeking systems” PhD program are to:

  • Provide academic environment for the professional growth of master’s graduates who have shown the motivation to work within the field of research;
  • Provide opportunities for research in interesting and perspective scientific topics and fields;
  • Guarantee the PhD students’ rights for study mobility by facilitating inter-organization and international student exchange;
  • Foster the application of criteria that ensure the high quality of research achievements within the following fields: information science, management of information channels, designing information systems, application of new technologies and innovations in information services, information design, design of communication tools in digital and virtual environments, and the impact of new technologies in the field of information.

With that in mind, the program also offers a deeper specialization with a specific field selected by PhD students for their studies: theory of information, modeling of information processes and influences, information services with a focus on quality of services, impact of new technologies on the personal and professional growth of individuals, and others.
