Many prominent scholars have worked in the sphere of History of Byzantium and the Balkans, such as Peter Mutafchiev, Peter Nikov, Bistra Tzvetkova, Milcho Lalkov. A natural consequence of this accumulation of scholarly achievement is the establishment of a new Department, which concentrates the research and teaching endeavors of the people working in the field of History of Southeastern Europe from Early Middle Ages to the present day. Some of the subjects studied are Cultural and Social History of the Byzantine Empire, Medieval Balkan States, Relationships between the Ottoman Empire and Europe, History of Political Ideas and Concepts on the Balkans and Problems of Relations Between Balkan Countries in Early Modern and Modern Times.
