The degree in archives and documentary studies started in the 2002/2003 academic year. No other university in Bulgaria offers this Degree. In the Faculty of History the Archives Program existed since 1952. The new degree is of wide application in contemporary information society in which the need for specialized archivists with a university degree is growing. It is also substantiated by the reform in state administration, the influx of information technologies and the spread of electronic documents and archives.
The Degree in Archives and Document Studies has as its major goal the education of highly qualified archivists and documentalists, specialists in archive and document management for the needs of the state administration, the private sector, the media, publishing houses, etc. At this stage the Bachelor's and the Master's Degrees are available only in the regular form of study.
The Bachelor's Degree covers 4 academic years (8 semesters). The curriculum includes core courses in the field of archives and document studies: Archives, Archive Theory and Methodology, Information Technologies in the Archives, Legal Aspects of Modern Archives, Historical Document Study, Modern Document Systems, etc., as well as some basic historical subjects. Practical studies are carried in the system of the state archives and state administration.
The Degree Program envisages an optional program for acquiring teacher qualification.
Students graduate with a written State Examination.
Graduates acquire the educational and professional qualification Bachelor of Archives and Document Studies.
Students can continue their education in the Master's Programs in Archives or other programs in the Humanities. They can also apply for doctoral studies.
