The Tourism education at the Faculty of Geology and Geography, at the "St, Kliment Ochridski" University, Sofia, has a long tradition. The separate speciality Geography of Tourism was created 35 years ago. In 1993 it was changed to Tourism.

There is a Bachelor Degree and a Master Degree, 8 and 2 semesters, respectively. The aim of the education in both programmes is to prepare widely educated specialists with high qualification in the fields of organization, planning, and management of tourism and recreation. They are prepared for working in the tourism industry, as well as research work in all its sectors:

 

  • Travel Agencies, and Tour Operators - as managers, consultants, and/or tour guides.

  • Municipality Administrations, National, Regional, and Local tourist organizations - as specialists in Tourism and Recreation.

  • Specialists in National, Regional, and Local Tourism Planning Agencies or Teams.

 

The main principles of the education are: orientation of the study programmes towards the European scientific standards, balance between theoretical and practical part of education (the sixth semester is provided as Internship in Tourism Industry), individual approach, cross-subject approach, connection with industry.

The Bachelor Students graduate with written state exam, and Master students graduate with a Master Thesis. Master students prepare their Thesis during their second semester, parallel with the educational process.

Essential influence on the professional background of students has the best specialized tourism library in Bulgaria, which is situated at the Department of Tourism. It also gives students the opportunity to work with Internet.
