During the first semester of the 2025–2026 academic year, within the joint Master’s programme “Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer”, offered by the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, the World Intellectual Property Organization, and the Patent Office of the Republic of Bulgaria, the lecture course “Copyright in the Digital Age” was delivered by Dr. Dimitar Ganchev.
Dr. Dimitar Ganchev is Deputy Director of the Culture and Creative Industries Sector and Head of the Creative Industries Department at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva. His professional experience encompasses senior expert and managerial positions in the fields of copyright and related rights, economic development, and the strategic use of intellectual property, as well as diplomatic service within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Bulgarian Mission in Geneva. A significant part of his work is dedicated to the analysis of the relationship between intellectual property and the creative industries, intellectual property management, and the development of methodologies for assessing the economic, social, and cultural impact of copyright.
During the course “Copyright in the Digital Age”, students had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the fundamental issues of copyright, presented alongside an in-depth analysis of the contemporary challenges of the digital environment. Particular emphasis was placed on the music industry, the management and licensing of rights across different jurisdictions, and the challenges of the global digital marketplace.
A substantial part of the lectures was devoted to the interaction between copyright and artificial intelligence, as well as the legal implications of the use of algorithms in the processes of content creation and reproduction. The discussions also covered the video game industry, with a focus on copyright protection and the applicable limitations and exceptions concerning interactive digital works.
For the third consecutive year, Dr. Dimitar Ganchev participated as a lecturer in the Master’s Programme “Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer”, thereby continuing the established tradition of the programme to attract leading international experts and to offer education that combines in-depth theoretical analysis with a strong practical orientation.
