On September 27-28, 2024, the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at Sofia University hosted the Ninth Scientific Conference of the Centre for Economic History Research on the topic "Barriers to Economic Development in a Historical Perspective". The conference was opened in the Aula of Sofia University by Prof. Dr. Sc. Sonya Mileva, Vice-Rector of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", Prof. Dr. Pencho Penchev, Chairman of the Board of the Centre for Economic History Research, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dimitar Zlatinov, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration and Head of the Department of Economics.

More than 60 participants contributed with presentations, representing the Academy of Sciences of Armenia, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia University, Veliko Tarnovo University, the University of National and World Economy, the University of Economics - Varna, Plovdiv University, Southwestern University, Agricultural University - Plovdiv, Ruse University, New Bulgarian University, the University of Library Studies and Information Technologies, the International Business School, the D. A. Tsenov Academy of Economics in Svishtov, as well as representatives from the regional history museums in Silistra, Veliko Tarnovo, Plovdiv, and Kazanlak.

The following reports from Sofia University were presented according to the conference program:

  • The Agricultural Sector in Bulgaria and Organizational Reforms in the Ministry of Agriculture during the 1930s – Directions and Functional Effects (Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sonya Georgieva and Chief Assist. Prof. Dr. Rositsa Zlatinska)
  • Inherited Property Rights and Economic Outcomes in Historical Perspective (Chief Assist. Prof. Dr. Stoyan Shalamanov)
  • Fiscal Policy and International Trade of Bulgaria in the 9th Century – The Issue of the Displacement of Bulgarian Merchants from the Constantinople Market in the 90s of the 9th Century (Dr. Mihail Raev)
  • Dynamics and Convergence of Labor Productivity in Bulgaria towards the Eurozone: A Comparative Analysis with Other Central and Eastern European Countries (Assoc. Prof. Dr. Stela Raleva and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dimitar Zlatinov)
  • Real Prices, Real Wages, and Purchasing Power during Communism, Transition, and EU Integration: Evidence from Bulgaria (Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ralitsa Simeonova-Ganeva, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kaloyan Ganev, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sc. Martin Ivanov)
  • Limits to Growth in the Context of the Ecological Transformation of the Economy in the EU (Prof. Dr. Vanya Ivanova)
  • External Economic Shocks and Economic Growth in Bulgaria and Romania in the 21st Century (PhD student Veselina Shalamanova)
  • The Demographic Crisis in Bulgaria as a Barrier to Economic Growth (Raya Georgieva and Stoycho Rusinov, students in Economics and Finance, 3rd year).

Upon review and approval, the reports will be published in the Ninth Volume of the Centre for Economic History Research, indexed in SCOPUS.
