The first nuclear regulation school organized by the Bulgarian Nuclear Regulatory Agency (BNRA) took place from September 25 to 28, 2024, in Borovets. Eighteen students from Bulgarian universities, along with nuclear sector experts, took part in the initiative. Among the participants were Anelia Ilieva and Daniela Sandulova, students in "Nuclear Technologies, Management, and Innovations in English”, a joint master's program between the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration and the Faculty of Physics.
The course included students from Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", Plovdiv University "Paisii Hilendarski", Technical University-Sofia, and the "G. S. Rakovski" Military Academy. Students from three faculties at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski"—the Faculty of Physics, Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, and Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy—took part in the school.
During the training, lectures were delivered by renowned specialists with international experience on topics such as the national regulatory framework, international regulatory practices, and regulatory practices of operators in Bulgaria. The students were divided into groups and given tasks to solve regulatory cases. All groups performed excellently, and the participants received certificates.
The training was opened by the Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Agency, Tsanko Bachijski. Other lecturers included representatives from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Nuclear Energy Agency of the OECD, the European Commission, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the Greek regulatory authority.
The event was organized by the Bulgarian regulator in partnership with the Kozloduy Nuclear Competence Center.
The master's program "Nuclear Technologies, Management, and Innovations in English" is a joint initiative of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration and the Faculty of Physics at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski". It follows the model of the IAEA's International Nuclear Management Academy (INMA). The programs included in the INMA initiative are aimed at current and future managers working in the nuclear energy sector, as well as for non-energy applications.
