On June 17, 2025, as part of the "Green Transition" forum program, Bulgaria welcomed Prof. Daron Acemoglu – winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics and author of the books "Power and Progress" and "Why Nations Fail". His visit was organized at the invitation of Dir.bg.
At the start of the day, Prof. Acemoglu participated as a keynote speaker in a high-level exclusive session, moderated by Iliya Lingorski, lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration. A summary of the discussion was delivered by the Faculty Dean, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Atanas Georgiev.
Prof. Acemoglu’s visit to Sofia was a rare and invaluable opportunity—unprecedented in Bulgaria—for economists, business leaders, policymakers, students, and engaged citizens to meet face-to-face with one of the most insightful thinkers of our time.
At the invitation of the forum organizers - Mrs. Monika Stanisheva and Mr. Sergey Stanishev, faculty members and students from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” were also invited to attend Prof. Acemoglu’s public lecture later that same day. The lecture, titled “Who Will Own the Future?”, attracted nearly 800 attendees who had the opportunity to listen and ask questions.
