With more than 20 years of experience in facility management, Boryana Todorova’s professional journey began as an office manager of a 250-square-meter office in Business Park Sofia. She has managed CAPEX budgets ranging between €1 million and €15 million, as well as OPEX budgets of up to €4 million. According to Todorova, budgeting should not be the sole responsibility of the Finance Department, but a shared task involving all relevant units.

On January 5, Boryana Todorova gave an engaging presentation at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, focusing on the differences between traditional budgeting and zero-based budgeting. The lecture also covered activity-based budgeting and rolling (flexible) budgeting approaches.

The practical examples presented by Boryana Todorova were met with strong interest from the students, with the lively discussion and numerous questions lasting even longer than the presentation itself.

The main takeaways from Boryana Todorova’s lecture were:

  • based on the company’s strategy, develop a facility management strategy for a period equal to or longer than the budgeting cycle—at least 18 months ahead, or longer if possible;
  • acquire a detailed understanding of clients’ and suppliers’ contracts;
  • monitor the facility services market and the labour market;
  • if you are a tenant or a landlord, keep track of the rental market;
  • maintain active communication with suppliers;
  • budgeting is a process in which the Finance Department should be your best ally—they should provide guidance and support, but should not prepare the facility budget on your behalf.
