It contains a simplified summary of the factors influencing the levels of various pollutants in the atmosphere and how their adverse effects can be eliminated or limited in order to improve urban air quality in both short and long term. Bulgaria and Sofia are used as an example of the various measures that are taken and the impact that pollutants have on various sites, sectors, activities. Some good practices in other countries are also mentioned.

Air pollution is a complex problem that requires in-depth and multilateral research, as well as the joint efforts of different groups of experts and stakeholders. In order to assess and manage the negative impact on the health of people living in urban areas, as well as the impact on the environment in these areas, a comprehensive and combined study of all factors contributing to undesirably high levels of pollution is required: information on the sources of pollution and the types of activities that cause it; meteorological factors determining the transport and spread of pollutants; chemical transformations that pollutants undergo, etc.
