Short Bio

Prof. Deyan Radev, PhD earned his Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in 2006 and completed his Master’s degree in International Economic Relations at the University of Konstanz, Germany, in 2008. In 2013, he received his PhD from Goethe University Frankfurt with a dissertation on Systemic Risk and Contagion in the European Union. His dissertation won two awards in Germany in 2014: the Best Dissertation Award of the Deutsche Bundesbank for best dissertation in economics at Johanness Gutenberg University Mainz and the Hochschulpreis of the prestigious German Capital Markets Institute at Deutsche Börse. The systemic risk indices developed in his dissertation have been adopted by the European Central Bank and are regularly featured in the European Systemic Risk Board’s Risk Dashboard.

Following his PhD, Prof. Radev worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Goethe University. From 2016, he served as a lecturer in finance at the University of Bonn, where he taught courses in empirical finance and banking at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. In February 2020, he joined the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” as an Аssistant Professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor in September 2022 and to Full Professor in December 2024 in the field of fintech, banking, and systemic risk.

Prof. Radev’s research has been presented to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the European Central Bank, the Bank of England, the Deutsche Bundesbank, the Bank for International Settlements, and at leading academic conferences such as those of the American Economic Association and the European Economic Association.

In addition to systemic risk, his research interests include: fintech and digital transformation, financial economics, banking and financial regulation, bank resolution, financial stability, risk management, sovereign default, political economy, and applied econometrics.
