History

Teaching economics is closely linked with the history of St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia. Economics was taught as early as 1892 in the newly opened Law Department of the First Higher School in Bulgaria. Later separate Departments of Finance and Political Science were formed in the Faculty of Law. Among the first lecturers was Prof Boev, reading a course in Finance and Statistics and leading a seminar on Demography. Another prominent lecturer is Prof. Danailov who reads courses in Political Economy, Introduction to Economic Policy, Trade and Industrial Policy, History of Economic Theories. In 1920-1921 the Professor of Political Economy Simeon Demostenov and of Economic History Ivan Kinkel joined the ranks.

In 1938 the Department of Public Economy was established within the Faculty of Law. It keeps close scientific contacts with the Statistical Institute for Economic Research established at the University in 1934. A number of modern subjects were included in the curriculum: Theoretical Political Economy, Theoretical Statistics, Economic History, Economic Policy, State Economy, etc.

In 1948 the Department of Public Economy at the Faculty of Law was transformed into the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences. It has 8 departments: Political Economy, Statistics, Economic History and History of Economic Thought, Economic Accounting, Finance, State and Constitutional Law and Economics.

In 1951, however, with a Decision of the Council of Ministers, the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences was closed down. The Karl Marx Higher Economic Institute took over its functions. Thus, the Department of Political Science alone remained in the structure of the University under the administration of the Faculty of Law.
