Major: “CHEMICAL ENGINEERING and CONTEMPORARY MATERIALS

Graduates from the major “Chemical engineering and Contemporary materials” receive educational degree “bachelor” (BSc) and an extensive practical skills and theoretical knowledge for the development of high-tech processes, and for obtaining, characterization and application of contemporary materials. They are highly-qualified chemistry experts with an extensive skills and knowledge about performing material and energy balances, analysis and control of basic chemical processes, synthesis and characterization of the material properties, formulation and characterization of complex structures and composition of chemical products.

Education:

General: Basic knowledge of Mathematics and Physics, in depth knowledge of basic chemical disciplines; habits and skills for laboratory chemical work; abilities for oral and written communication skills in the field of science and technology; computer literacy.

Special: Depth knowledge in the main sections of chemical engineering and contemporary materials, including transport phenomena and separation processes, computer modelling of materials and chemical engineering processes, structure and composition of the main types of materials, mechanical, electrical, optical and other properties of materials, methods for characterization the structure and properties of materials based on inorganic synthesis, preparation and characterization of nanomaterials. Opportunity to obtain a professional qualification “teacher in chemistry”.

Career:

Main types of professional activities: Active participation in scientific research, technological implementation and production activities in the field of chemical engineering and contemporary materials. The graduated students could continue their education at the faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy, for the master degree program “Disperse Systems in Chemical Technologies” or in other programs in the field of Chemistry and Physics, to work in corporate research institutes, universities, manufacturing companies or to develop their own business in the field of synthesis and processing of contemporary materials (polymers, metal, ceramic and composite materials), pure and ultra-pure substances, formulation of dyes, pharmaceutical and food products, as well as in numerous other areas requiring training in chemical engineering and material science.

Major “Chemical Engineering and Contemporary materials” is an upgrade of the former major “Chemical Physics and Theoretical Chemistry”, whose alumni are respected professors in American and Western European universities, such as:

  • Prof. О. Velev in North Carolina State University, USA;
  • Prof. P. Atanasov and prof. D. Petzev in University of New Mexico, USA;
  • Prof. P. Vlahovska in Brown University, USA;
  • Prof. R. Dimova in Max-Planck-Institute for Colloids and Surfaces, Germany;
  • Prof. V. Paunov in University of Hull, UK.

Our training program aims to prepare professionals with a profound training in Chemistry and Physics, presenting the general principles of modern technology for manufacturing of contemporary materials and chemical products.

„Hello! We are Nevena and Dilek – we are among the first graduates of the major “Chemical engineering and Contemporary materials”. Four years after passing our training courses and scientific research in the field of chemical engineering, we are proud of the serious theoretical knowledge and excellent experimental skills that we received. At the beginning of our training we participated in several scientific conferences – in our country and abroad. In this way we had the opportunity to exchange skills and knowledge with other students, Ph.D. students and Post Docs from different world famous institutes. Our excellent practical and theoretical training provided us a possibility to visit Paris where we practiced in the international company Saint Gobain. There we developed innovative materials for thermal insulation. Now we are working on projects in the Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering, where we apply our knowledge on scientific problems of high practical relevance.“

„Hello! My name is Yana. Now I live in Sweden and work as Early Stage Researcher in NEWGENPARK – this is a huge project funded by the European Commission with its major aim being to create new packaging materials from renewable natural resources, which could protect food from oxygen and water. As graduate student from the major “Chemical Engineering and Contemporary materials” I can say that I gained an excellent experience, as well as theoretical and experimental skills at a global scale. That made me competitive in the international market and opened so many doors in my career. Innovative thinking and excellent knowledge in the field of science is the key to success in the 21st century!“
