International Young Scholars Seminar “The Early Modern Period in the Balkans and Central Europe – Sources, Methods and Concepts”

The Center for Regional Studies and Analyses (CRSA) and the Faculty of History of Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski were pleased to organise the International Young Scholars Seminar “The Early Modern Period in the Balkans and Central Europe - Sources, Methods and Concepts”. The initiative took place at the Conference Hall of Sofia University between 22 and 25 June 2022.

Assoc Prof Mira Markova, Dean of the Faculty of History, and Assoc Prof Maria Baramova, project lead of „Ранното ново време на Балканите и в Централна Европа – източници, методи, концепции/ The Early Modern Period in the Balkans and Central Europe – Sources, Methods and Concepts“ delivered the opening speeches at the event. The speakers underlined the importance of that kind of forums and initiatives for establishing networks among the researchers of Modern history.

The event brought together young and established scholars from leading universities in Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary and the Czech Republic to discuss various aspects of the Early Modern Period in the Balkans and Central Europe. The papers were divided into seven breakout sessions, covering topics such as everyday life in the Ottoman lands and Central Europe, the relationship between architecture and power, taxation, aristocracy and diplomacy in the Habsburg monarchy.

During the seminar, the participants took a walking tour of the city centre with Kirila Atanasova (CRSA) and debated the problems of the Ottoman cultural heritage in Bulgaria. In addition, they visited the Boyana Church, where thanks to Assist Prof Dr Georgi Sengalevich (National Archeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences), they learnt the latest discoveries in the architectural monument.

The seminar “The Early Modern Period in the Balkans and Central Europe – Sources, Methods and Concepts” is part of the initiative “ CENTRAL-EUROPEAN WORKSHOPS (CEW) – Bridging Early Modern History: International Workshops for Young Historians from Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine in Early Modern History ”. It aims to establish professional networks and improve the communication between the young and senior researchers of the Early Modern Period.
