A newly-discovered mineral K-Mg arfvedsonite, recently discovered by Dr Momchil Dyulgerov, Senior Assistant Professor at the Department of Mineralogy, Petrology and Ores and Minerals at the Faculty of Geology and Geography, was presented at the Museum of Mineralogy, Petrology and Ores and Minerals at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. The event was part of a series of occasions marking the 125th anniversary of the Museum which is to be celebrated in 2017.
Eleven new minerals have been discovered in this country that far. Only three of them have been discovered by research workers who were not Sofia University faculty, Associate Professor Vasilka Mladenova pointed out. She expressed her joy at the fact that Dr Dyulgerov had joined that club and wished him make further discoveries in the future.
Elena Neykova, curator at the Museum, said how glad she was that the hopotype of the mineral would be kept at the Museum of Sofia University.
Dr Momchil Dyulgerov reported that the newly-found mineral had been licensed by the Commission for New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification at the International Association of Mineralogy in December, 2016. Dr Dyulgerov has been working on alkaline magmas in the vicinity of the villages of Bouhovo and Seslavtsi, Sofia county, for the past ten years. His Ph D dissertation focused on the same topic and it was in that type of rocks that he had discovered the new mineral. In the following months an article will be published reporting the results of the research work.
