Prof. Ana Proykova, Department of Atomic Physics, Sofia University, is the new Vice-Chair of the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR), EC.

Prof. Proykova is author and co-author of a number of scientific works, as well as a leader of research in the field of nanotechnologies. She works for the Department of Atomic Physics, Sofia University, and is a bearer of many scientific awards.

She is also a member of prestigious European organizations in the field of nanotechnologies, as well as editor of the Internet Journal of Molecular Science, Central European Journal of Physics (Atomic and Molecular Physics), reviewer of scientific projects under FP6 & FP7, member of the Belgian Science Fund and the Spanish Fund CONSOLIDER.

The Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) provides opinions on emerging or newly-identified health and environmental risks and on broad, complex or multidisciplinary issues requiring a comprehensive assessment of risks to consumer safety or public health and related issues not covered by other Community risk assessment bodies.

Potential areas of activity include:

  • antimicrobial resistance
  • new technologies (e.g. nanotechnologies)
  • medical devices including those incorporating substances of animal/human origin
  • physical hazards (e.g. noise, electromagnetic fields)
  • tissue engineering
  • blood products
  • fertility reduction
  • cancer of endocrine organs
  • interaction of risk factors, synergic effects, cumulative effects
  • methodologies for assessing new risks
