The PhD programme at the Department of Sociology offers outstanding training in sociological knowledge and research methods, and prepares students for professional careers in sociology. Our substantive and methodological areas of concentration include: Economic, Cultural and Political Sociology, Urban and Rural Studies, Research Methods, Classical and Contemporary Sociological Theory, Social Inequality and Stratification.

We offer an intensive programme of study and a supportive research environment to develop research skills and experience. The PhD programme centres on close individual tuition and guidance from your supervisor and/or co-supervisor who offer advice, feedback and guidance on all aspects of the PhD process. Progress is reviewed formally once a year when you will receive detailed feedback and guidance on your work from the faculty staff outside your supervisory team.

PhD in Sociology requires successful completion of the following: core curriculum, elective courses, research experience, attendance at conferences and other events as appropriate to your project, at least two peer-reviewed papers, a one-semester teaching assistantship and a dissertation with a departmental and university defense.
