Programme objectives

MA students will acquire the so-called “digital competence”, which in accordance with the European Comission Acts includes, without being exclusively limited to, the following skills:

  • to produce content for the existing media – from newspapers to virtual communities;
  • to create diverse digital content by mastering the specifics of writing for the new media as well as the online audio-visual media tools;
  • to discuss and apply EU acts in the field of digital technologies;
  • to work with EU programmes and funds in the area of the Information society;
  • to competently and actively use the media including participation in virtual communities, a more effective use of the potential of media entertainment, access to culture, inter-cultural dialogue, education and everyday applications such as libraries, digital Internet-distributed audio-visual formats (podcasts);
  • to develop a critical stance to media both with regard to the quality and accuracy of their content (for instance, ability for information assessment, adequate response to various media advertisements, intelligent use of search engines); to get acquainted with the fundamentals of media economics and the difference between pluralism and media ownership by EU standards;
  • to gain familiarity with the problematics of the copyright law, which bears essential significance for “the culture of legality”, especially for the young generation in its dual role as both a content consumer and author.

Training and instruction (knowledge and skills required for successful occupational performance; general theoretical and special training etc.)

At the end of the course MA students will be able:

  • to analyze and apply the national and European legislation in the field of digital technologies and media;
  • to apply EU standards for production and distribution of creative content online;
  • to interpret the social, economic and cultural effects of digital technologies;
  • to use the specialized terminology concerning Internet and digital technologies with a view of working with official EU documents and other specialized texts in English;

Professional competence

The MA programme is interdisciplinary. It provides instruction and training in the major areas of the Information society: EU Internet policy, Internet business, Internet law, web journalism and online creative writing, tele-democracy and E-government as well as in the main fields of online creative content.

The interdisciplinary approach guarantees understanding and integrated application of EU legal, economic and political standards and the related reforms within the context of Bulgaria’s EU membership.

Professional realization

Upon the completion of the programme, MA students will acquire the skills for professional work with new digital technologies, active production of online creative content in areas such as new media, advertising, business administration, public administration, non-governmental sector etc.
