The Centre for Economic and Historical Research (CEHR) and the University of National and World Economy (UNWE) invite you to participate in a scientific conference on the topic “Wars, Revolutions, Insecurity”, which will be held on September 26 and 27, 2025 in Sofia.
A main characteristic of economic life is the presence of insecurity. Among the factors that cause insecurity are wars and revolutions. However, their impact on the economy is not assessed unambiguously in theoretical and empirical studies. In some cases, revolutionary changes have a positive effect on society. Some researchers draw attention to the fact that wars are a solid prerequisite for reducing inequalities in society. The organizers of the Annual Scientific Conference of the CEHR challenge researchers of the economic past to examine the significance of wars, revolutions and the insecurity they have caused on economic development in a historical perspective.
The significance of wars, revolutions and the insecurity they have caused on economic development is extremely diverse. The main effects could be systematized as follows:
- Institutional changes: legal disorder, corruption, regulations and over-regulations;
- Stimulation of the economy and/or destruction of civilizational achievements;
- Inflation and changes in international finance and trade;
- Demographic problems;
- Social tension;
- Long-term changes in the organization and functioning of the economy;
- Technological development and/or stagnation in technologies, etc.
Discussions during the conference will focus on several main areas:
- Main sources of uncertainty in Balkan/Bulgarian history throughout the ages;
- Institutional structure and wars;
- Economic factors for wars and revolutions;
- Economic consequences of wars and revolutions;
- Trade wars;
- Economic and social revolutions – economic prerequisites and consequences;
- The settlement/region in the conditions of uncertainty caused by wars and revolutions;
- Economic actors and wars, revolutions and uncertainty.
The conference is open to participation of historians, economists, lawyers, sociologists, etc. You can participate with a report lasting up to 15 minutes. Attendance at the conference and oral presentation of the report is mandatory due to review procedure and the subsequent publication.
