During the General Assembly Meeting on 15 October 2019, Assoc. Prof. Atanas Georgiev was elected as the new Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration (FEBA) at Sofia University, after receiving fifty-seven votes from the fifty-seven delegates.

Assoc. Prof. Georgiev went through his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at FEBA, taking his bachelor’s degree in the “Economics” program (2004), his master’s degrees in “Finance and Banking” and “Energy Economy and Management” (2007, 2008) and obtaining his doctoral degree with a dissertation titled “The Institutional Independence of the National Energy Regulator in Bulgaria” in 2016.

 

Assoc. Prof. Georgiev has attended a series of trainings in leading institutions like IVLP/Global Energy Security of the US State Department (DC, NY, OK, CA, WA), Generation Next of Rossotrudnichestvo, courses in “Pricing” and “Benchmarking” at the Public Utility Research Center (University of Florida, USA), the Energy Summer School at the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy, Energy Law at the Florence School of Regulation (European University Institute - Italy), as well as a training in Energy Security at the Masaryk University (Czech Republic) etc.

 

As a student, Assoc. Prof. Georgiev was chair of the student Business Club – SU “St. Kliment Ohridski” at FEBA and later he chaired the Managing Board of the FEBA Alumni Club.

 

In 2005 he started working as a part-time and in 2007 as a full-time assistant at the “Industrial Economics and Management” Department where he went on to be in turn Academic Secretary, Director of the “Energy Markets and Services” Master’s program and Head of Department (2018). His scholarly interests have been in the sphere of energy economics and the regulation of utility services. He is author of two books and more than thirty academic publications, and he has supervised over forty master’s theses in this sphere.

 

Assoc. Prof. Georgiev has been guest-lecturer in the energy diplomacy courses of the Diplomatic Institute at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria and has also guest-lectured at a range of universities among which the University of Cologne (Germany), nine universities in Ukraine as part of the Diplomatic Institute project and the University of Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina).

 

He has also worked as coordinator and manager of several academic and educational projects completed by the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration in partnership with other organisations (a JRC-financed project, COP21:RIPPLES as part of the Horizon 2020 Program, the Doctoral Academy of Economics and Management Studies – financed by the ECF, etc.).

 

Assoc. Prof. Atanas Georgiev is member of the Management Board of the National Branch Chamber “Electric Vehicles Industrial Cluster”; the World Energy Council – Bulgaria; the Bulgarian Association of Assets and Facilities Management and Maintenance. He is also member of the International Association for Energy Economics and of the FEBA Alumni Club.

 

Outside of the University, Assoc. Prof. Georgiev has also worked as a consultant in the restructuring of the energy sector. He publishes and is chief editor of specialised periodicals: “Utilities” and “Facilities”.
