History

Teaching economics is closely linked with the history of St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia. Economics was taught as early as 1892 in the newly opened Law Department of the First Higher School in Bulgaria. Later separate Departments of Finance and Political Science were formed in the Faculty of Law. Among the first lecturers was Prof Boev, reading a course in Finance and Statistics and leading a seminar on Demography. Another prominent lecturer is Prof. Danailov who reads courses in Political Economy, Introduction to Economic Policy, Trade and Industrial Policy, History of Economic Theories. In 1920-1921 the Professor of Political Economy Simeon Demostenov and of Economic History Ivan Kinkel joined the ranks.

In 1938 the Department of Public Economy was established within the Faculty of Law. It keeps close scientific contacts with the Statistical Institute for Economic Research established at the University in 1934. A number of modern subjects were included in the curriculum: Theoretical Political Economy, Theoretical Statistics, Economic History, Economic Policy, State Economy, etc.

In 1948 the Department of Public Economy at the Faculty of Law was transformed into the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences. It has 8 departments: Political Economy, Statistics, Economic History and History of Economic Thought, Economic Accounting, Finance, State and Constitutional Law and Economics.

In 1951, however, with a Decision of the Council of Ministers, the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences was closed down. The Karl Marx Higher Economic Institute took over its functions. Thus, the Department of Political Science alone remained in the structure of the University under the administration of the Faculty of Law.

Teaching and Research

The Department of Economics has been a part of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration since 1991. The Department of Economics is among the main structural units and is a leader in the education of students majoring in "Economics and Finance" as well as in the Master's Programs "Economics and Law", "Customs and Tax Control", and "Economics and Finance". The department is accredited in Doctoral Program "Economics and Economic Policy" in Bulgarian and English. It provides the teaching of fundamental courses in general economic theory (microeconomics, macroeconomics, and international economics) and economic theories, as well as in functional disciplines such as labour economics, applied macroeconomic analysis, monetary policy analysis, investment theory and management, economic policy, economic analysis of law, etc. In addition, it serves the education in economic disciplines in a number of other faculties of the University - the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Philosophy, the Faculty of Geology and Geography, the Faculty of Pedagogy, and others.

For many years a scientific seminar dedicated to the problems of the economic development of Bulgaria has been functioning at the Department of Economics. Both teachers and students from the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration as well as scientists from other institutions and representatives of practice are interested in it.

The lecturers of the department participate in a number of national and international research projects, among which in recent years: Public-private partnership in the economic policy of Bulgaria; Economic, financial and social aspects of the impact of aging in Europe; National Strategy for Regional Development; National Operational Program for Regional Development; Civic education in Bulgaria and others.
