The Department was founded in 1928.

English and American Studies is the Programme offered at the Department of English and American Studies, one of the oldest departments of the University. Its academic staff at present numbers about forty highly qualified specialists in the fields of English Language, British and American literature and culture. Twelve of them are professors, twenty have PhD degrees and three are Dr. Habil. The Department offers programmes at the Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral level.

The course of study in the Bachelor’s Programme takes four years (eight semesters). Students can choose between specialisations in translation or teaching of English. In 2003/2004 a credit system was introduced,which gives students the opportunity to personalize their studies at a very early stage and diversify the subjects covered in keeping with their interests.

There are over 400 students in the Bachelor’s programme at present. They have free access to the Library of English and American Studies with its valuable collection of fiction and books in diverse areas, newspapers and magazines, audio, video and computer resources. The Department participates in several exchange programmes with distinguished centers of English and American studies abroad.

All this makes the Department not only a desired place for study, but also a center for international contacts,scientificexchange and extensive research in the fields of language, literature and culture of the English-speaking world.
