New Exhibition of the XXVII Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition at he National Museum of Nature

In the Pisces Hall at the National Museum of Nature at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences a new exhibition of the XXVIIth Bulgarian Antarctic exhibition was opened by Professor Christo Pimpirev, Director of the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute and the National Center for Polar Research at Sofia University, and Professor Nikolay Spasov, Director of the National Museum of Nature.

The marine organisms collected in the South Bay of the island of Livingston during the XXVIIth Bulgarian Antarctic expedition were exhibited in three new sections in the Pisces Hall on Floor 2 of the Museum.

The museum exhibits include some of the biggest ever caught specimens of crocodile ice fish, four specimens of the nototaenia species, eight species of marine invertebrates and two species of algae. The scientific samples were collected in the literal zone of the Bulgarian Polar Base on the island of Livingston. The laboratory processing and the subsequent taxonomic identification were carried out at Hydrobiological monitoring laboratory by Associate professor Lyubomir Kenderov, at the Ichthyology laboratory at the Department of General and Applied Biology at the Faculty of Biology of Sofia University by Dr Elisa Ouzounova, and at the National Museum of Nature laboratory at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences by the ichthyologist Dr Tihomir Stefanov.

The marine invertebrates – mussels, snails, sea spiders, ribbon worms, starfish, etc. were caught by Associate professor Lyubomir Kenderov of Sofia University. The exhibition was put on by Dr Tihomir Stefanov and Dr Lyubomir Kenderov with the help of volunteers from the Students’ Marine Club at Sofia University.

The National Museum of Nature at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences acknowledged their special gratitude to the commandant of the Bulgarian Antarctic Base Mr Yordan Todorov, thelogistician of the Base Mr Yordan Yordanov for the catch and the transportation of the crocodile ice fish..

The XXVIIth Bulgarian Antarctic expedition took place from November, 2018, to March,2019 and was led by Professor Christo Pimpirev. The marine organisms were collected by Associate professor Dr Lyubomir Kenderov of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in fulfillment of the Hydrobiological monitoring of coastal sea water from the literal zone near the Bulgarian Pole Base on the island of Livingston project, the latter was part of the Fund for the financing of polar scientific research – 2018 with headquarters at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”.
