Establishing José Saramago Department of Camöes Institute at Sofia University

The Rector of Sofia University Professor Dr habil Anastas Gerdzhikov and HE Ambassador Luís Faro Ramos, President of Camöes – an Institute for Cooperation and Language at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Portugal signed an agreement for the establishment of José Saramago Department at the Faculty of Classical and Contemporary Philology.

The Departments of Camöes Institute function as a form of interinstitutional cooperation between Camöes and foreign high academic institutions with the aim of supporting the scientific research activities in the domain of Portuguese studies. José Saramago Department at Sofia University will form part of the world network including 50 other Camöes departments,opened at prestigious high academic institutions in more than 20 countries where Portuguese language, literature and culture are taught and studied within the framework of integral university subjects with long academic traditions.

The agreement envisages the institutional support of Camöes for the implementation of scientific and research projects in the domain of Portuguese studies including scientific fora, lecture cycles and meetings with prominent scholars and workers in the field of Portuguese culture, the realization of highly specialized teaching seminars, promotion of student competitions for translation of Portuguese literature and the publication of the outstanding pieces, and support of the project and publishing activities.

The ceremony was attended by HE Ms Helena de Almeida Coutinho, Amabassador of the Republic of Portugal to Bulgaria, Professor Dr Reneta Bozhankova, Sofia University Vice-rector, Professor Dr Madlen Danova, Dean of the Faculty of Classical and Contemporary Philology, Professor Dr Yana Andreeva, acting head of the Portuguese philology special group, Dr Anaisa Gordino, Head of the Camöes Center for Portuguese Language and Culture in Sofia and a lector in Portuguese language and culture at Sofia University.
