The Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” Assoc. Prof. Dr. Atanas Georgiev has been elected as an alternate member of the Administrative Board of the Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) for a four-year term, effective from 28 January 2026. Assoc. Prof. Georgiev was nominated by the Ministry of Energy, and his nomination was confirmed on 11 December this year by a decision of the Council of the European Union appointing two members and three alternate members of ACER. The changes in ACER’s management are related to the expiration of mandates of the previous leadership.

In 2024, Assoc. Prof. Georgiev was elected as an alternate member of ACER’s Administrative Board with a term running until January 2026. On 11–12 December this year, Assoc. Prof. Georgiev took part in the 70th meeting of ACER’s Adm​inistrative Board in Ljubljana with an advisory vote, and on 12 September this year, he participated in the selection of the Acting Director of the Agency, having been authorized by one of the permanent members of the Adm​inistrative Board to act as their substitute.

The Adm​inistrative Board is responsible for the Agency's governance as well as all administrative and budgetary activities. The AB members are appointed by the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union.​

ACER is an EU agency established in 2011 under a regulation that forms part of the Third Energy Package. The bodies represented in ACER are the national energy regulatory authorities of the EU Member States. The Agency promotes the development of a fully integrated and well-functioning European energy market in which electricity and gas are traded and supplied in accordance with the highest standards of integrity and transparency, enabling consumers and businesses in the EU to benefit from greater choice, fair prices, and better protection.

To achieve this goal, ACER works closely with a wide range of stakeholders in the energy sector, as well as with EU institutions and policymakers. ACER is headquartered in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Georgiev is a graduate of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration and serves as Head of the Department of Industrial Economics and Management. He has long been the Director of the Master’s Programme “Energy Markets and Services” and is also Director of the Master’s Programme “Nuclear Technologies, Management and Innovations”, taught in English. This programme is a joint project of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration and the Faculty of Physics and is endorsed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as a member of the International Nuclear Management Academy (INMA) initiative.
