The Twenty Second Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” Annual Conference

"Environmental, social and governance challenges for recovery and resilience"

November 26-27, 2021

Hybrid event

The Covid-19 pandemic performed a global shock that raised the turbulence in the world society and economics to a whole new level. It divided people, parties, and countries. Governments and business responded with diverse strategies, which led to different results, yet we have little clue on the causal effects of strategies on results. We live in unprecedent uncertainty, complexity, and even unclarity about basic predictions.

The conference of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration calls its academic, business, government and civil society partners to discuss the major challenges for sustainable recovery and resilience. We look for conceptual and empirical contributions to understand better the current crisis, its complexity, factors, and impacts.

We look for full papers or work-in-progress presentations, which would stimulate rigorous academic and policy-relevant dialogue on the following topics:

  • Multidisciplinary and multifaceted analyses of personal, group and organizational behavior in response to Covid-19. How did different countries respond to Covid-19 and what was the effect of different measures on social and economic level? Are there any gainers and how they differ from the companies, which won out during or after the global financial crises a decade ago? What are the cultural determinants of individual attitudes towards the corona virus, vaccines, and anti-covid measures? We welcome both individual company, country or institution studies as well as comparison studies.
  • What are the effects of economic crises on informality? What determines if a crisis will reduce or increase informality in each sector or country? Are the anti-covid measures informality-neutral? How does informality impact growth on different levels, is it counter- or procyclical?
  • How are environmental, social and governance (ESG) agendas, criteria, standards and reporting different across countries and sectors? What determines the social consciousness of investors, governments, and customers? What is the reason for the backlash against ESG in certain countries?
  • What are the plausible scenarios for a just transition to a carbon-neutral economy? What should be the policy responses to the increasing prices of C02 emissions? Is this going to lead to higher or lower electricity prices? What other challenges exist to energy resilience in Bulgaria and the European Union?
  • Corporate governance systems undergo fundamental changes in the last 20 years. European regulations require disclosure of ultimate beneficial owners and the pressure against the tax neutral jurisdiction known as offshore zones and tax heavens is increasing constantly. In Eastern Europe state owned enterprises continue to dominate the landscape of the largest companies in terms of assets and in critically important sectors. We are interested to explore what are the challenges to follow the OEC guidelines on corporate governance in state owned enterprises?

The conference will feature a PhD panel with participating students from Sofia University, UVSQ, FAU, University of Reading, University of Exeter, and others. We will have guest-speakers from editorial boards of journals, who will discuss the path of publishing papers in journals, indexed in Web of Science and Scopus. The PhD panel will provide networking opportunities, which might lead to common research projects and publications.

For panel suggestions please write to conference@feb.uni-sofia.bg by November 7. Please submit an abstract of your contribution (working paper, full paper, work-in-progress) to the conference by November 15, 2021.
