On the 29th of September 2021 Assistant Professor Dr. Mariya Trifonova, scientific secretary of Department of Industrial Economics and Management and coordinator of Master Program “Energy markets and services” defended her PhD thesis on the role of the institutions for the development of the RES sector in selected EU countries.

The dissertation explores the institutional set-up and its impact on the different stages of emergence and development of the technology-driven renewable energy (RES) industry. The study focuses on the industrial sectors applying photovoltaic and wind energy technologies in Bulgaria, Germany and Greece. The work applies and further develops the Technology Innovation Systems approach with focus on technology innovation followers.

It is concerned with the factors affecting the social acceptance of energy infrastructure in the transition to low-carbon energy technologies. In relation to this, the findings of a nationally representative survey on social acceptability of renewable energy technologies were presented. For the visual depiction of the outlined institutional evolution paths and in order to compare the peculiarities in the three considered countries, an approach for mapping the transition trajectories has been applied. The thesis also delivers important observations and conclusions regarding the EU policy in the area of climate and energy based on clean technologies informing the decisions concerning the RES sector of governments, businesses and the civil society both in Bulgaria and in other European countries.
