The department was founded in 1952.

The launching of the Programme in Turkish Philology at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in programme based on an Eastern language,which contemporary equivalent is the Programme in Turkic Studies. The Department of Turkic and Altaic Studies is the continuation of the former Department of Oriental Studies,which later grew to become a unique Centre for the Study of Eastern Languages and Cultures.

The B. A. Programme in Turkic Studies prepares specialists in different theoretical and practical areas,in which professional knowledge of Turkish is essential. Besides the four-year Bachelor’s Programme, the Department offers three M.A. Programmes. The academic staff includes distinguished scholars and specialists in a variety of areas.
