Programmes launched:
Spanish Studies 1961
Portuguese Studies 1992

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies offers two programmes in Ibero-Romance studies. The highly qualified academicstaff comes from Bulgaria, Spain and Portugal. Both Programmes have their own libraries. The Servantes Hall, the first one funded by the Spanish government, opened in 2000. It has 10 computers, on-line connection to the virtual Servantes centre in Madrid and unlimited access to Internet resources. Since 2006 the Servantes Hall and the Spanish Library have become part of the Department and have been renamed “Eugenio Coseriu” Spanish Center. A Portuguese center is soon to be founded.

The curricula of the two programmes fully correspond to those at distinguished international institutions of higher education. Degrees issued by the Department are recognized through a special procedure by the Spanish Ministry of Education. Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” has signed several agreements for cooperation with various Spanish and Portuguese universities.

In 1998 the student CLUB COLOMBO was launched which caters for international cultural exchange.

At present around 220 students are enrolled in the B.A. programmes. The language of instruction is Spanish or Portuguese respectively and the course covers eight semesters. The Department offers diverse two-or-three-semester Master’s programmes innovating constantly the teaching methods and the syllabi. Education at the Doctoral level follows individual, student-tailored study plans.
