The Department was founded in 1969.

Methodology of Foreign Language Teaching is a separate Department at the Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology. Its main task is the training of teachers of all modern languages – English, Armenian, Greek, Spanish, Italian, German, Portuguese, and French. Traditionally teachers of Latin and Ancient Greek have also been trained at this Department.

Teacher training for philology students at the B.A. level is carried out in keeping with the requirements of the Unified State Standards for the acquisition of teacher qualification. It is offered in the fourth year of study and covers the last two semesters. It includes a theoretical and a practical module.

The theoretical module covers a lecture course of 30 hours and 30 seminars in the winter semester and two elective courses in theoretical and practical issues of teacher training in the summer semester.

The practical training includes a teaching practice of 75 hours at state schools and an internship of 75 hours in the summer semester. More than 50 experienced teachers (mentors) from various schools in Sofia take part in this training under the terms of agreements for cooperation between the Department and the respective schools.

The Department offers an M. A. Programme, which awards a degree in Methods of Foreign Language Teaching. The Programme has an interdisciplinary character. It includes courses in methodology, linguistics, literature, psychology and other relevant fields and subjects.
