GATE Institute - Big Data for smart society - is the first high-tech center of excellence for scientific research and innovation in the field of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence in Bulgaria and Eastern Europe. It was established in 2019 as a research institute of Sofia University, in partnership with Chalmers University of Technology and Chalmers Industrial Technologies, Sweden - European leaders in research and innovation in the field and drivers of strategic initiatives such as AI Sweden, AI Research Centre, AI Innovation of Sweden and Digital Twin Cities.

The Institute aims to create a unique environment and infrastructure for applied scientific research in cutting-edge technology areas - Big Data and Artificial Intelligence and to be a globally competitive digital hub for innovations that address global challenges in the areas of "Future Cities”, 'Digital Health', 'Smart Industry', “Intelligent Government'.

GATE is an initiative that invests in people, placing a special focus on young and talented researchers. Its main goal is to develop significant scientific capacity and to inspire and cultivate the next generation of scientists and experts in the field of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence.

For our team, we are looking for a proactive and communicative Business Development Expert (European and other programs and initiatives), who will discover new opportunities for funding research and innovation activities from European and national programs, as well as will develop effective forms of collaboration in the fields of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence at the international and national level.

As a Business Development Expert in European and other programs and initiatives you will be responsible for the further development and expansion of the GATE institute ecosystem with international partners from EU and worldwide - academic and research institutions, business organizations, technology companies, startups and entrepreneurs, governmental and non-governmental organizations, associations.

You will be actively involved in the process of initiating and organizing a research project, from exploring and identifying opportunities, through establishing and developing contacts with potential partners, to preparing and submitting the project proposal in collaboration with other GATE departments and teams.

The perfect candidate should demonstrate extensive experience in preparing, winning and implementing projects (with a preference for research) under various international/European and national programmes, good skills in working in an international team, multi-tasking skills and excellent time and project management.

The preferred candidate (European and other programs and initiatives) should significantly contribute to expanding the GATE ecosystem with strategic partners and ensure effective long term funding of GATE research and innovation from various sources.

 

Expert Business development (European and other programs and initiatives)

 

Position’s responsibilities:

  • Strategic long-term planning to ensure public funding of the institute from European and national programs and
  • Discovery and development of new opportunities for funding research and innovation activities from European and national programs, including monitoring of new trends and priorities in applied research and their business aspects, areas of growth, funding programs, significant initiatives;
  • Optimization of the process of preparing and submitting project proposals, as well as the management and reporting of research and innovation projects financed by European and national sources;
  • Identification and development of new partnership opportunities with European and national institutions, including research institutions, business organizations, technology companies, startups and entrepreneurs, governmental and non-governmental organizations, associations, as well as the various departments of the EC.
  • Identifying and establishing contacts with appropriate representatives of relevant public and private organizations, establishing and developing partnerships and collaborations with potential partners and stakeholders;
  • Having a clear understanding of GATE's research and innovation competencies and expertise, with the aim of better presenting and promoting them to various partners and stakeholders, as well as offering value adding opportunities for their application;
  • Understanding the needs of GATE’s stakeholders and partners and proposing effective solutions and specific activities to reflect them;
  • Preparing project proposals in collaboration with researchers and other GATE experts, organizing the relevant administrative, financial and legal aspects;
  • Identifying and participating in relevant scientific and informational seminars, conferences, and events at the national and international level.
  • Organizing internal training on new trends and programs, funding opportunities and the development of project proposals;
  • Discussing the communication strategy and activities with the responsible experts, proposing and planning specific activities, in order to improve the image and further expand the ecosystem of GATE;

 

Our requirements:

  • Preferred higher education in information technology, public/business administration, international relations, communications or other related field;
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in a similar position.
  • Additional specialization in preparation, planning, management and reporting of projects with European and national funding is an advantage;
  • An established business network through international and national projects will be considered a strong advantage;
  • Excellent verbal and written English skills;
  • Proficiency in MS Office;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Strong motivation, results orientation, organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Strong negotiation skills when working with partners and contractors;
  • Good time management skills and ability to handle multiple diverse tasks simultaneously.

Recruiting stages:

  1. Evaluation of the documents submitted by the candidates and admission to the procedure of those meeting the requirements set out in the notice. The successful candidates will be informed by 30.01.2023.
  2. An interview with the successful candidates will take place between 31.01 and 06.02.2023.
  3. All interviewed candidates will be informed of the outcome of the competition.
  4. The selected candidates will be appointed on a contract basis.
