The GATE Institute - Big Data for a Smart Society - is the first high-tech research and innovation center in the field of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence in Bulgaria and Eastern Europe. It was established in 2019 as a research institute of Sofia University in partnership with Chalmers University of Technology and Chalmers Industrial Technology, Sweden - European leaders in research and innovation in the field and leading strategic initiatives such as AI Sweden, AI Research Centre, AI Innovation of Sweden and Digital Twin Cities.

The Institute is creating a unique environment and infrastructure for applied research in cutting-edge technology areas - Big Data and Artificial Intelligence and to become a globally competitive digital hub for innovation and its application to solve global problems in the fields of Future Cities, Digital Health, Smart Industry, Smart Government.

Data Engineer

 

Your responsibilities:

  • Structures, parses, integrates, and manages large sets of structured and unstructured data, imports heterogeneous data from different data sources into different types of databases (relational, document-based, graph databases, etc.);
  • Harmonizes data structures and nomenclatures;
  • Develop data mining processes and application programming interfaces (static, dynamic and real-time);
  • Continuously improve the data collection and structuring process;
  • Ensures effective data management including metadata description, creation of data dictionaries and semantic models;
  • Ensures data quality by selecting appropriate processing tools (normalization, anonymization, cleansing, etc.);
  • Prepares publications with research results;
  • Follows the latest technological trends in the field;
  • Engages in appropriate training and professional development opportunities.

 

Requirements:

  • PhD degree in Information Technology - Computer Science, Information Technology, Applied Mathematics, Engineering or related technical field. Alternatively, a Master’s degree in one of the listed areas plus a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in the industrial sector or academia;
  • Experience in data modeling and administration of databases of different types (relational, document-based, graph databases);
  • Experience applying data cleansing and transformation approaches with ETL tools;
  • Knowledge of languages such as RDFS/OWL ontologies, RDF shapes, RDBMS DML, XSD, JSON Schema, etc.
  • Programming skills with programming or scripting languages such as Java, Scala, Python, Perl, etc. is an asset;
  • Good communication and presentation skills, ability to prioritize tasks and work on a multiplicity of activities, motivation to discover new approaches and ways to create value and deliver results in AI, teamwork skills;
  • Analytical and solution-oriented thinking;
  • English - excellent level of proficiency.

Stages of the contest:

1.The Selection Committee reviews the documents, submitted by the candidates and selects those meeting the requirements of the job, as described in the job profile. The selected candidates will be informed by 30 January 2023.

2.Online interviews will be held with the selected applicants in the period 31 January – 6 February 2023.

3.All interviewed candidates will be notified in writing.

4.The successful candidate will be offered a labour contract under the project BG05M2OP001-1.003-0002-C01 „Big Data for Smart Society”.
